Have JWs and other Christians completely missed the point of Matthew 24:4-8?
by Island Man inmany people think those verses are suggesting that the wars, earthquakes, food shortages, etc are all a sign that the end is imminent.
however, a careful examination of the context seems to suggest that jesus was actually forewarning his followers not to draw such a conclusion from such events.
see this interesting article on the subject:.

For a Jehovah's Witness, which causes more problems: a decorated tree, or a decorated woman?
by I_love_Jeff inlet's say that a brother, joe, is walking to kingdom hall and he passes a store display featuring a christmas tree.

Thinking of taking a break from this forum
by yadda yadda 2 instarting to feel my time is wasted on here lately and its time to move on.. some of the best, meaty stuff only gets a few hundreds views and as soon as the posts dry up a bit the thread is soon forgotten (usually in a few days) under the constantly falling snowflakes of new threads (many trival) continuously being created and popping up as 'active topics'.
the same core jw related subjects then keep reappearing over and over again as new threads without getting a thorough treatment at the time (eg, there must be at least one 'are jw's a cult' thread started each week on here; 'new light' topics get about 20 new threads started with the quality of analysis spread and diluted over all of them.).
anyone else tend to feel the same way at times?.

Glaring terminological inexactitudes in this week's Watchtower study farticle!!
by Island Man incheck out the watchtower's erroneous definitions/descriptions of evolution and creationism in paragraphs 2 and 3 respectively on page 7 of the october 15, 2013 watchtower:.
"in its basic form, the teaching of evolution asserts that all life came into existence spontaneously.
"on the other hand, fundamentalists of christendom teach that the universe, including our earth and all life on it, is only a few thousand years old.

Technically you're right Island Man. The theory of evolution is a model for the origin of species not the origin of life, although Darwin did suggest that the original spark of life may have begun in a "warm little pond, with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts, lights, heat, electricity, etc. present, so that a protein compound was chemically formed ready to undergo still more complex changes".
Both theories in their modern form exclude any external supernatural agent. Evolutionary scientists today don't support Darwin's statement that a creator originally started it all off.

Bible Has Problems, Yet Its One Verse Can Solve All Our Problems!
by abiather inscience shows that humans have been living on earth more than 6000 years (contrary to ot chronology).
again inconsistency is pointed out in nt too which says jesus who did countless good worksincluding control over forces of nature and even death itselfyet people killed him, just like killing the duck that lays golden egg!.
despite such inconsistencies, a single verse in the bible can solve all our problems: don't call anyone on earth 'father,' because you have only one father, the one in heaven.

Your sources and any links to this claimed Kerala social experiment would be appreciated please.
There is much economic research to support some of those ideas actually.
For example, economists have proven that the number of hours worked each day could be globally greatly reduced comfortably without any loss in standard of living. The great English Philosopher and political activist Bertrand Russell was an open advocate of it in his book 'In Praise of Idleness". Many European countries have enacted laws to reduce weekly work hours, France notably. During the great depression, many US companies, including Kelloggs, adopted a 30 hour working week with great success.
It is a very curious social phenomenon that nearly everyone is working 40 plus hours a week but nearly everyone wishes they didn't have to.

There is nothing especially wrong with the Watchtower's comments there, however they are also obviously 'creationists' just not the orthodox kind.
'Spontaneous' seems a fair word to describe fundamentally what evolution teaches about the origin of life:
spon·ta·ne·ous (spn-tn-s)
adj. 1. Happening or arising without apparent external cause; self-generated. 2. Arising from a natural inclination or impulse and not from external incitement or constraint. 3. Unconstrained and unstudied in manner or behavior. 4. Growing without cultivation or human labor.
[From Late Latin spontneus , of one's own accord, from Latin sponte ; see (s)pen- in Indo-European roots.] -

Don't give the Society ideas or they might require Burkas at meetings to prevent all those lustful brothers getting excited by the sight of your pretty faces and ankles.

What is the difference between decorating a Xmas tree and decorating the face?
by I_love_Jeff indecorating the christmas tree is not scripturally condemned yet the jehovah's witnesses are not allowed to decorate it let alone have one in the house.. .
as for makeup, watchtower says the following: .
modest and tasteful use of cosmetics and articles of adornment is not scripturally condemned.

Excellent reasoning.
Same reasoning for Birthdays. Why are wedding rings and wedding anniversaries that also have associated pagan origins ok for JW's but poor JW kiddies can't even have a harmless birthday party? Israelites families commemorated a child's weaning on reaching its 3rd birthday and the scriptures tell us Job (or was it some other Bible patriarch?) had a special celebration on the anniversaries of his children's birth and used it as an opportunity to praise Jehovah for the gift of children.
